Departure

We will pick you up from your hotel or meet at another pre-arranged location and spend the day exploring what might be described as the jewel in Almeria’s crown – Cabo de Gata.  It is the area’s premier reserve – offering a little bit of nearly everything – birds and wildlife of shallow lagoons and saltpans, plains and mountains, rocky beaches and the sea.

The list of birds and other creatures we might encounter is a long-one.  Some of the highlights might include: Greater Flamingo, Little Stint, Kentish Plover, Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Audouin’s and Slender-billed Gulls, Gull-billed and Whiskered Terns, Spectacled and Fan-tailed Warblers, Stone Curlew, Black and Black-eared Wheatear, Golden, Short-toed, Booted and Bonelli’s Eagles and much more…

At the right time of  of year we might find migrants such as Temminck’s Stint, Caspian and Lesser-crested Terns and Red-footed Falcon, could spend time watching the sea for Cory’s and Balearic Shearwaters as well as passing Skuas and Petrels and have the chance of finding the iconic Trumpeter Finch.

This is a truly special place and offers a great day out for beginners and experts alike – all year round.

The day will include regular coffee breaks and either a packed lunch or tapas overlooking the sea at Almadraba de Monteleva. We could also take a break on the beach and have a swim – if desired (Spring/Summer).  We might also have time to visit the local ‘Alboran’ micro-brewery and taste/purchase some of the beers!

My wife and I had a fantastic 2 days with Paul & Garry. We spent a day exploring Caba de Gata which was a great mixture of wetlands, salinas, mountains, scrubland, Rambla and dunes in a compact area. Our 2nd Day was in the Sierras, dessert, deciduous woodland and plains so a wide range of habitats in the 2 days. Saw something like 80 species over the 2 days including the iconic Trumpeter Finch !
Paul and Garry were both great company , and excellent local guides both with good Spanish which is a must !. They certainly knew their birding stuff so it was an entertaining , interesting and educational 2 days for us.
Many thanks guys :-). 10/10 ! We will be back !
