This day tour offers a chance to explore two contrasting wetland areas – both offering the chance to see great waterbirds and a range of other exciting birds.
We will start the tour at the Punta Estinas de Sabinar Reserve on the edge of Roquetas de Mar. For people staying in Roquetas or nearby this is a great and convenient location. ‘Sabinar’ will give us the chance to see great waders, including Collared Pratincole, Little and Temminck’s Stints as well as Flamingos, Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Purple Gallinule and other waterbirds with the chance to see the very rare Marbled Teal. We should also find Terns including Gull-billed and Whiskered Terns, Glossy Ibis and Great White Egret. There is a chance of Alpine Swift, Pallid Swift and raptors including Marsh Harrier overhead and we should find European Rollers, Zitting Cisticola (or Fan-tailed warbler) and Iberian Grey Shrike.
We will have lunch in Roquetas then make the short drive to Las Norias. Our journey will take us through a sea of ‘plasticos’ – the plastic-sheeted greenhouses used for growing vegetables locally – but it is well worth it to visit this hidden gem of a location. ‘Norias’ offers Night Heron and Squacco Heron, Little Bittern, Yellow Wagtails including ‘Flava’ species, Great Reed Warbler, White-headed Duck and again a chance to see Marbled Teal, as well as waders, Purple Gallinule and Pratincoles.
